WESTERN STAR

When Irish people think of visiting the west coast of the United States, San Francisco and Los Angeles usually top the list, with a stopover on the way home in that sun-baked casino theme-park called Las Vegas. There is an alternative. San Diego might not have a Golden Gate bridge or Hollywood Studios but it has plenty other attractions – and sunshine nearly all year round. (Irish Times)

PALM SPRINGS MODERNISM WEEK

When I visited Palm Springs, California, I had no trouble remembering where I was. I had trouble placing when I was. The city is well known for its impressive array of Mid-Century Modern buildings — many of which have been preserved, some of which have been tragically lost. The sleek aesthetic of the middle 20th century has always struck me as incredibly futuristic, which is what creates that “wobbling in time” feeling — don’t ask me to tell you what year it is when I’m looking at fifty year old building that seems like it belongs to an era that won’t happen for another fifty years.  (USA Today)

TEEN FINDS SAN DIEGO AN ‘EPIC’ ADVENTURE

…We were on a family trip to San Diego, which included Pam’s stereotypically unenthusiastic 15-year-old niece, Olivia, and Sadie, her college-age daughter. Last time we were in town, we took the kids to the San Diego Zoo, visited SeaWorld, and built sand castles on the beach. This time around, traveling with a tougher, older crowd, we had to ramp up the adventure meter. So far, after two days of surfing, shopping, biking, power boating, and cruising the beaches, things were “epic.’’ That’s good.  (The Boston Globe)
