Celebrating #CaliforniaSurfingDay with 650+ Bloggers at TravelCon

By Kristen Bonilla 10/04/2018

Overlapping with #CaliforniaSurfingDay Sept. 20, Visit California’s earned media team attended a major travel blogging conference, TravelCon Sept 20-22,

Attended by more than 650 bloggers and approximately 100 speakers, TravelCon is a new conference put on by well-known influencer Matt Kepnes (Nomadic Matt) with a mission to help creators in the travel space learn how to work with brands and tourism boards better as well as hone important business skills.

Visit California saw this as a great opportunity to reach a highly influential crowd and to network with influencers and bloggers the earned media team plans to partner with on future campaigns. The team also realized it would be a great way to create social buzz in the moment, especially when the California Legislature declared surfing the official state sport and that Sept. 20 each year was now  California Surfing Day.

To this end, a California surfing simulator was set up in the conference's Media Marketplace to give all attendees an opportunity to catch a wave. “Surfers” were asked to use #CaliforniaSurfingDay and #TravelCon in social posts for a chance to win one of two California surfing trips, generously donated by San Diego Tourism Authority and Santa Monica Travel & Tourism.

The social promotion worked: Austin, Texas ranked among the top cities with Tweets using #CaliforniaSurfingDay. Attendees had fun "hanging ten" during coffee breaks, and the first California Surfing Day was promoted to a network of global bloggers.
