Introducing the 'California Now Podcast'

Visit California has launched its latest content platform: the "California Now Podcast."

This new channel allows Visit California a unique opportunity to provide consumers with deep, personal and informative content while capitalizing on this increasingly influential distribution channel.  

The "California Now Podcast" explores the people, places and experiences that make California a fascinating travel destination. Host Soterios Johnson, a veteran radio journalist and former host of NPR’s "Morning Edition" on WNYC in New York City, is a relative newcomer to California. Alongside the listeners, Johnson will get a front row seat to learn more about his adopted home state. In each 20-to-30-minute episode, Johnson interviews a variety of insiders — travel experts, chefs, local guides and many others — as he looks to build out his personal “to-do list” in the Golden State.

Launching with three episodes, Visit California will continue to add new episodes in the coming months. Available on most major podcasting sites such as iTunesGoogle PlaySoundcloud and Sticher, consumers can listen to PBS host Samantha Brown talk about her love of Big Sur; veteran travel writer Patricia Schultz sharing insight from her widely popular book, “1,000 things to See Before You Die;” and documentary filmmaker Jeff Smith describing the ultimate beer-lover’s road trip. Each episode is supported by show notes available on that provide additional information and direct links to all of the locations featured in the podcast. 

This new content experience is the first of its kind in the destination space and rounds out Visit California’s content program. Research shows the podcast market is continuing to grow. In 2017, more than 52 percent of Visit California's global brand target listened to a podcast. Listenership is up more than a third year-over-year, and this inherently intimate medium skews heavily affluent. It is a natural fit for Visit California to provide this kind of long-form content to consumers, many of whom will be new to the Visit California content ecosystem.
