Michelin and Visit California announce state-wide edition of the MICHELIN Guide

By Angie Pappas 03/07/2019

Its official! With the announcement of a partnership between Michelin and Visit California at Outlook Forum in February, the big reveal of the first-ever state-wide Michelin guide took place on March 5 in Visit California’s home city of Sacramento.

The MICHELIN Guide California 2019 will include the currently covered San Francisco Bay Area and Wine Country, as well as restaurants in greater Los Angeles, Monterey, Orange County, Sacramento, San Diego and Santa Barbara.

The announcement of the MICHELIN Guide California was made at a press event hosted in partnership with Michelin and Visit Sacramento, with more than 30 local and international journalists, influencers and broadcast media in attendance, along with destination partners from around the state.

While Visit California has always known that the state’s diversity and abundance of culinary experiences are truly unique, the partnership further validates that California’s unparalleled culinary scene is on the cutting edge of gastronomy when it comes to farm-to-fork ingredients, experiential dining and a signature laid-back luxury lifestyle.

Commenting on the new expanded guide, Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the MICHELIN Guides, said, “With access to many of the world’s best farms, food producers and vineyards, California cuisine is respected worldwide not only for the quality of its ingredients but also due to the creativity displayed by its chefs. In addition, our inspectors have been impressed with the talent and innovation within the gastronomic community across the state. Michelin’s partnership combines Visit California’s strength in tourism with Michelin’s 120-plus years of experience in gastronomy.”

Visit California would like to thank our partners at Visit Sacramento and the host venue, Golden 1 Center. It was an honor to launch such a program in America’s Farm-to-Fork Capital, in a venue known for its local dining options from farmers, breweries and wineries within 150 miles.

Visit California and Michelin will come together once again in early summer for the revelation of the inaugural California guide, bestowing stars upon the state’s top restaurants, as well as naming Bib Gourmands (inspector’s favorites for a good value) and Michelin Plate restaurants (simply a good meal).

Be sure to start picking your favorite local spots now and get your reservations set, before the world gets (Michelin) stars in their eyes for California’s amazing restaurants!
