Visit California expands popular New York Media Event

By Kristen Bonilla 04/06/2018

This year’s annual Visit California New York Media Reception was complemented by an additional day of programming offered to partners to make the most of their time in the city. The second, optional day featured more intimate media mixers with editors at Meredith and Condé Nast, as well as an influencer luncheon.

Even though the region endured its fourth Nor’Easter of the month, media trekked through the snow to get a little California sunshine and enjoy Golden State-inspired food, California wine and lively conversation.

On Tuesday, March 20, the traditional New York Media Reception welcomed 82 media to meet with the 34 industry partners in attendance. Media included AM New York, Daily Meal, Fodor’s Travel Forbes, Live with Kelly & Ryan, NBC Today, Sherman’s Travel, Skift, Telepictures, Thrillist and more.

On Wednesday morning, the 20 partners who signed up for day two split into two groups for editorial mixers:

The Condé Nast Media Mixer Breakfast had 11 media in attendance, including Brides, Condé Nast Traveler, Self, Vanity Fair and more.

The Meredith Media Mixer Breakfast welcomed 19 media, including Better Homes & Gardens, FamilyFun, Family Circle, Martha Stewart Living, Parents and more.

A digital influencer luncheon was held that afternoon at California-inspired Pizza Beach to focus on networking with this important media segment. Fourteen digital influencers attended, including Cheat Day Eats, Devour Power, Food Baby NY, Nomadic Matt and more.

In hosting four events over two days, partners had more opportunities for one-on-one meetings and access to media and influencers they otherwise may not have. This year’s reception also featured a renewed focus on quality over quantity in terms of media. Visit California carefully curated the invite list to ensure partners would have more meaningful meetings.

Speaking to this new approach, Karna Hughes, director of communications for Visit Santa Barbara, said, “I REALLY loved the edited journalist attendee list at the main reception and so appreciated all the love from Visit California in sending media to my table. The Condé Nast mixer was also a truly wonderful opportunity.”

Visit California is constantly working to improve and expand its media events, evolving with the ever-changing media landscape and taking into account feedback from the industry.
