California Tourism Month

Request Info

In 2016, the California Legislature passed a bipartisan resolution declaring May California Tourism Month, spotlighting tourism’s role as a key economic driver for the Golden State.

Travel is ingrained in the state’s very identity, and its economic and cultural benefits have ushered in a new era of prosperity. California Tourism Month is the time of year to celebrate all that has been accomplished and tell the state’s tourism story.

Unlike any other industry, tourism uniquely touches every community throughout the state — from California's biggest gateways to its most tucked-away locales. California Tourism Month provides a platform for Visit California to execute a multifaceted, statewide and monthlong strategy to educate, inform and engage with key audiences — and we need your help to tell tourism’s story.

Industry Toolkit: Now Available

California tourism and the state’s thriving economy is not possible without the businesses, destinations and people welcoming visitors every day. To spread this message to all corners of the state, Visit California has created a toolkit you can use to leverage California Tourism Month at the local level.

The toolkit includes everything you need to activate a grassroots campaign around the transformative power of California’s tourism industry:

Travel Impacts Report: Now Available

The cornerstone of California Tourism Month is the release of Visit California’s annual Travel Impacts Report. The report’s findings highlight the eighth consecutive year of growth for California’s tourism industry since the Great Recession. The report reiterates that tourism is a powerhouse that generates community benefits and economic value for all Californians. View the state report.

National Travel and Tourism Week: May 6-12

The U.S. Travel Association’s National Travel and Tourism Week is a weeklong tradition for the U.S. travel community to celebrate the value travel holds for the economy, businesses and personal well-being.

U.S. Travel is releasing a comprehensive toolkit to help partners and stakeholders spread that message. Included in these resources are tips to host a successful Travel Rally Day, talking points for media and elected officials, and sample social media posts. For more information, take a look at U.S. Travel’s toolkit here.

Visit California Speaking Engagements

In leveraging the spotlight of California Tourism Month, Visit California is scheduled to speak at a number of events throughout the month:

  • May 7: Orange County Visitors Association Tourism Conference
  • May 9: Santa Monica Tourism Summit
  • May 10: Ventura Visitors and Convention Bureau NTTW Open House

State Capitol Installation: May 21-25

Tourism’s value will be on full display in Sacramento at the State Capitol through a 60-foot visual installation next to the Governor’s Office showcasing the state’s diverse tourism regions and celebrating all the ways the tourism industry contributes to a prosperous California.
