JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Summary:

The Manager of Group Business will work directly with the Director of Trade and Group Business to maintain Visit California’s Professional Meetings & Events (PME) programming as it relates to the promotion of California as a premier meeting destination. These programs include cooperative programs with key meeting planner partners, PME trade shows, roadshows, meeting planner site visits and other programs targeting the meeting professionals.

Key duties include PME trade show and event planning and execution, California tourism industry partner recruitment and management, development of client relationships in the PME sector, development of cooperative programs, and other marketing activities targeting the meeting planner professionals.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Liaise with meeting planner companies like Northstar, PCMA, MPI, and others to negotiate year-round partnerships and co-op opportunities.
  • Manage integration into PME conferences and trade shows ranging from speaking opportunity, engagement zone, out-of-home and digital advertising to industry collaboration.
  • Manage roadshow planning and execution from site selection, venue negotiations, branding, California tourism industry management and meeting planner invitation.
  • Manage year-round meeting planner site visits to California with key Californian destinations.
  • Manage always-on destination asset creation and curation (for meeting planner audience).
  • Be the first point of contact for industry requests and questions in regards to Visit California’s PME initiative.
  • Support Director of Trade and Group Business in planning and executing a comprehensive PME development strategy.
  • Represent Visit California at PME focused trade shows, conferences and events.
  • Present at industry events, webinars, and speak on behalf of Visit California.
  • Write final reports, website community posts and other articles.
  • Assist with a wide variety of other special projects or campaigns for Visit California (example: Visit California Outlook Forum).

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • 40% Develop and manage day-to-day execution of integrated Professional Meetings & Events marketing plans. Plan and execute Visit California’s integration into PME conferences and trade shows, sales events, roadshows, promotion and cooperative programs working closely with the travel trade and global marketing team. Development of programs and execution of content needs, evaluation of partnerships and creation of tools and messaging.
  • 25% Manage written industry communication specific to meeting planner program of work. Contribute to committee meeting reports and presentations, budget management and executive communication.
  • 15% Establish and maintain relationships with key meeting professionals in the domestic markets. Represent Visit California at key PME conferences, trade shows and events and manage on-site partner relationships.
  • 15% Interface with California travel and tourism industry partners including regional destination marketing organizations along with key stakeholders such as hotels, attractions and others.
  • 5% Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE

Essential Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each key duty satisfactorily, as well as exhibit the following qualifications:

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast paced environment.
  • Minimum of three years professional experience in the meeting planning and/or tourism industry, including working with hotels, destination and meeting planners.
  • Previous experience in sales and trade show management including project management, promotion of events and forum-like programs, industry communication, event coordination, etc.
  • Ability to make presentations to small and large groups.
  • Independent critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  • Previous experience of working in the meeting industry including client events, trade shows, site visits and conferences.
  • Education equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree or higher in marketing, recreation, tourism or related field is a must.
  • Must be able to travel domestically as needed. Occasional international travel may be needed.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products, include Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be comfortable with public speaking in small and large group environment.
  • Certified Meeting Planner (CMP) and/or PCMA certifications a plus.
