Communications Manager

The Visit California Communications Manager collaborates across the organization and within California's travel industry to develop and execute a communications strategy. Responsibilities include writing, reviewing, and editing copy for executive correspondence, web pages, email and print communications; content creation, curating and promotion for Visit California events; and speechwriting, production and execution of Visit California multimedia presentations. The Communications Manager serves as the editor for all corporate communications including industry newsletters, annual report, digital communications including emails and websites, executive correspondence, public affairs op-eds and other ongoing industry relations collateral. Additionally, the Communications Manager travels several times a year throughout California to attend Visit California events and board meetings.


Key Duties & Responsibilities:
Estimated % of Time 

  • 25% Develop presentations for Visit California executive staff for events including Visit California Commission and committee meetings, industry relations speaking engagements and other events throughout the year. Responsibilities include researching and developing content, visual design and multimedia execution and production of presentations; some technical configurations and support for presentations including setup and playback; and coordination of presentation details such as location, room setup, and audio-visual requirements. Manage organization’s slide library and work closely with Visit California staff to ensure consistent, up-to-date presentation content is available and used appropriately.
  • 25% Review, revise and proof all Visit California print materials for accuracy, clarity, consistency and Visit California organizational standards. Work with Visit California departments, outside vendors, graphic designers/web developers and others on project management, curation of content and delivery of materials to meet deadlines and uphold the Visit California brand/message.
  • 25% Serve as editor for ongoing industry-facing publications including the annual report (Year In Review) and monthly newsletter (Insights). Work closely with Visit California departments to obtain information, research appropriate content, draft newsletters in print and electronic format, and execute desktop graphic duties to include photos, logos and design elements. Manage appropriate vendors for production.
  • 15% Assist Director of Corporate Communications with various written correspondence and materials on behalf of the Visit California, including executive correspondence, op-eds and other industry communications.
  • 10% Other duties as assigned by supervisor.



Essential Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each key duty satisfactorily, and demonstrate the following:

  • Minimum four years of experience as a writer and/or editor.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a writing discipline such as English, journalism, communications or related field, or equivalent combination of experience, education and training.
  • Strong knowledge of AP style. Excellent proofreading, writing and copy-editing skills.
  • Strong expertise of Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as experience with a content management system. Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite products including Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and other publishing software is preferred.
  • Ability to communicate and work well with others in a professional office environment.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Experience in writing across a variety of platforms.
  • Strong project management skills.
