International Press Trips Return to California

By Nick Leonti 01/26/2022

After international travel restrictions were lifted on Nov. 8, 2021, Visit California resumed hosting international media. Through a series of familiarization tours, influential journalists from Canada, France, Germany, Mexico and the U.K. created California travel stories to share with these valuable markets.

Highlights included German influencers enjoying surfing lessons, a hot air balloon ride and the San Diego craft beer scene. Two stars from the French equivalent of “Survivor” explored the Central Coast. Top YouTube producers from Mexico attended a Sacramento Kings versus Los Angeles Clippers NBA game and enjoyed dinner in Carmel. Others partook in wine tasting in the Sonoma Valley, Oakland’s food scene, new attractions such as the Academy Museum, and of course all the offerings of California’s major gateways of Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Even with new travel guidelines and the widespread challenges the hospitality industry is facing, the enthusiasm of fam participants was higher than ever — a great indicator that pent-up demand and desire for travel will provide the much-needed boost California’s tourism economy is hoping for.

With so much uncertainty and stress throughout the tourism industry, the Visit California PR team is strategically and carefully creating itineraries to meet the current needs and bandwidth of partner DMOs. The aim is to not overwhelm any destination in this initial wave of hosting, while still generating the coverage and support needed to accelerate the recovery of the state’s tourism economy.

While monitoring the ever-changing international travel landscape, Visit California will be strategically re-engaging with more global markets to provide opportunities to showcase the full breadth of California’s amazing tourism product through the travel media.
