Destination Third Thursday: Auburn

The Visit California team took a virtual trip up the road to learn about Auburn’s tourism offerings from the Auburn Economic Development Commission.

Auburn is located in the beautiful foothills of Placer County, just 30 miles northeast of Sacramento. Auburn is known for its rich California Gold Rush history is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts.

Visitors enjoy the many hikes the region has to offer. The Auburn State Recreation Area offers fishing, hiking and historical activities such as gold panning. The city boasts many local breweries to chase down a day outdoors, including Knee Deep Brewing Company, Crooked Lane Brewing Company, Auburn Alehouse, and Moonraker Brewing Company.  

Auburn makes a great day trip for Northern California locals, but it’s also the perfect spot to spend a weekend getaway. The town offers many hotel and vacation rentals, as well as camping options for the outdoor enthusiasts. One of Auburn’s hidden gems is the Park Victorian, a stunning Victorian home built in 1874. It’s now a boutique luxury lodging property with incredible views of Old Town Auburn.

When exploring Old Town Auburn or Downtown, there are so many options when it comes to shopping and dining. Shops feature custom and local items, including Zhush Modern for timeless clothing, jewelry, and décor. On Saturdays, the Foothill Farmers Market in Old Town offers local and seasonal treats.
