Visit Native California partners join Visit California staff for a Destination Mixer

Visit California hosted a special edition of the Destination Mixer spotlighting the rich traditions, cultures and histories of Native communities across California. Attendees were immersed in an educational journey, delving into the unique aspects of these communities and gaining insights into their cultural significance and contributions to the state. Through interactive exhibits, engaging presentations and informative discussions, participants discovered the pivotal role of Native communities in shaping California's tourism landscape, highlighting their contributions to the state's diverse travel experiences.

The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians offered an immersive program that took participants on an enlightening an educational journey through the tribe's rich history, culture and traditions. Attendees explored the fascinating world of this federally recognized tribe located in Palm Springs. A virtual reality exploration allowed users to step into the stunning landscapes of Indian Canyons, learning about the significance of the natural wonders and the tribe's deep connection to the land. Additionally, a curated collection of traditional Cahuilla artifacts provided insight into their cultural significance and usage. The culinary experience included tasting authentic mesquite bars and refreshing prickly pear lemonade, offering a delicious glimpse into traditional food and drinks.

Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation and Seka Hills provided a comprehensive overview of their tribe and the Seka Hills brand during the event. Attendees gained insights into the tribe's identity and the founding principles behind the Seka Hills brand. A unique tasting experience was offered, allowing participants to explore the nuances of olive oil by sampling four distinct varieties and learning how they differ. Additionally, guests had the opportunity to taste an array of other Seka Hills products, including balsamic vinegar, almonds, walnuts, beef jerky, beef sticks and honey.

The Pechanga Resort Casino, representing the Pechanga Band of Indians, showcased three key areas of their resort and casino during the event. Guests were treated to interactive experiences at each station, beginning with Spa Pechanga, where they had the opportunity to create their own body scrub using native botanicals, such as white sage and acorn. Additionally, they sampled chia-blueberry mini muffins, a traditional food item with roots in Pechanga culture. Attendees also indulged in native botanical-infused tea and experienced the Journey of the Payómkawichum meditative soundscape, a tranquil auditory journey inspired by the Pechanga people's historical trekking routes from the ocean to inland settlements. The display featured native plants, brochures, and current Spa Pechanga menus to enrich the learning experience. At the Journey at Pechanga golf course station, guests could test their skills with a hole-in-one challenge, showcasing the ecological and cultural significance of the course. Finally, the casino excitement came alive with a roulette station, offering guests the thrill of the game with chocolate casino chips as a delightful twist.

The American Indian Alaska Native Tourism Association (AIANTA), representing the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail, provided an overview of their organization, highlighting the 109 federally recognized tribes in California. They also showcased the NATIVE Act Awardees, including the La Jolla Band of Luiseño Indians and the Pit River Tribe KWAHN Corporation. Additionally, AIANTA emphasized the cultural significance of Route 66, which traverses more than half of the country and hosts 25 tribes along its path. AIANTA highlighted Native destinations and experiences along the Anza Trail, emphasizing the importance of Native representation and showcasing various cultural events, museums, outdoor recreation opportunities, and more along the trail. Attendees also had the chance to savor indigenous bars produced by Wahpepah's Kitchen, adding a flavorful touch to the immersive cultural experience.
