Visit California recently launched “California: Where Every Stop Becomes a Story,” a nine-film cinematic series highlighting the state’s rural regions through short-form visual storytelling.

Produced as part of Visit California’s FY24/25 Regional Marketing Program, the series was created in partnership with filmmakers Will Pattiz and Jim Pattiz of More Than Just Parks and the state’s eight designated rural tourism regions.

Filmed over a 12-month period across all four seasons, the project captured 38 destinations statewide, creating what Visit California describes as its most comprehensive visual portrait of California’s rural landscape.

The series consists of nine cinematic films, including one statewide overview and eight regional features. Each film is 60 seconds and presented without narration or voice-over. Instead, the films rely on music-driven storytelling and landscape cinematography to highlight the character of each region.

Distribution Strategy

The content was developed with a platform-first distributions strategy. YouTube serves as the primary hub for the series, hosting the full films and anchoring the campaign’s long-form narrative. Vertical-format versions of the films were created for social platforms to expand reach and encourage discovery of the featured destinations. The approach allows the content to remain active across platforms beyond the initial launch window.

Shared Content Library for Regional Partners

In addition to the films, the program generated a rights-free content library available to participating regional tourism partners for ongoing marketing efforts. Deliverables for each region include 75–100 high-resolution photographs highlighting key points of interest, a 60-second regional highlight film, a statewide hero film featuring all regions and 25–50 b-roll clips designed for use across marketing campaigns. Regional partners can view and download assets through the regional collections available on the asset landing page.

The series began rolling out Feb. 18 with the release of the overview film and will continue with regional releases through April 15, 2026.
