Visit California recently returned from a Brand USA Trade and Media Mission in India, reaffirming the state's strong appeal in this booming travel market. With over 85 trade and media meetings, 92 trade buyers from 17 cities across India and the largest-ever delegation, the mission reinforced the immense potential for growth in Indian visitation to the Golden State. Alongside the mission, Visit California hosted a "Play Day" in Ahmedabad, engaging key trade buyers and luxury travel experts.

India’s travel market is rapidly evolving, with a shift toward luxury, adventure and curated experiences. While shopping remains a key travel motivator, Indian travelers are increasingly seeking unique, immersive experiences beyond traditional group tours. Social media, particularly YouTube and Instagram, plays a dominant role in shaping travel decisions, with many travelers choosing destinations based on digital content and influencer recommendations. The demand for off-the-beaten-path destinations and culinary tourism is also rising, presenting opportunities to showcase California’s diverse offerings.

Despite visa wait times posing a challenge, the market remains strong, with over 5 million Indians holding 10-year visas and a growing number eager to explore beyond the U.S. gateway cities. India’s aviation sector is expanding rapidly, with plans to increase the number of airports from 157 to 200, making long-haul travel more accessible. Additionally, Indian air carriers are looking to double their aircraft fleets in the next five to seven years, with significant plane orders from Air India signaling the potential for more direct lift to California. The country’s affinity for luxury experiences is evident in the rise of premium cabin travel, further positioning California as an attractive destination for high-value visitors.

With 86% of Indian travelers holding a positive perception of the U.S. — the highest of any international market — California is well-positioned to capitalize on this demand. As Indian travelers continue prioritizing experience-driven tourism, the Golden State stands ready to welcome them with its world-class attractions, vibrant cities and unparalleled natural beauty.
