Samantha Brown’s new 'Places to Love' series spotlights Santa Cruz, Monterey and Big Sur

By Kristen Bonilla 02/22/2018

“I’m traveling through one of the most stunning stretches of earth and sea in the world. Where the fury of the Pacific meets the curve of the cliffs and all the bountiful land in between.”

That’s how travel expert Samantha Brown explains being on California’s iconic Highway 1 in the upcoming episode of her new series, “Samantha Brown’s Places to Love” on PBS. The episode, sponsored by Visit California, airs Saturday, Feb. 24 (check your local listings for exact date/timing in your area).

From Santa Cruz through Monterey and down into Big Sur, Brown explores what makes this destination truly unique – from the beautiful landscapes to the captivating stories of the people who strengthen these communities.

For over 15 years, Samantha Brown has traversed continents, experienced culture, and tasted adventure while applying her singular brand of warmth and inclusion along the way. Now, Samantha joins the public television family with 13 new 30-minute episodes that seek out the little-known spots and haunts where innovators and disrupters are creating a brand new travel experience. "Samantha Brown’s Place to Love" will take viewers on a discovery of the emotional heart of travel by highlighting the people who are changing, challenging and strengthening a destination to deliver a decidedly refreshing and enriching travel experience.

In Santa Cruz, Brown visits Nicholson Vineyards, where the owners are often the ones pouring the wine, and Penny Ice Creamery, where all the ice cream is made with local, seasonal ingredients and the recipes have been perfected over years.

Traveling down Highway 1, Brown stops at Haute Enchilada in Moss Landing to meet the owners over lunch and view the local art in the restaurant’s gallery. She visits Castroville to meet the Pezzini family, who started their family farm in 1929 with a root they carried over from Italy. And finally, she heads to Monterey Bay Aquarium to view the Kelp Forest feeding show and learn about ocean conservation.

In Carmel, the renowned travel expert meets Jack Reisdorf, a 14-year-old who started Carmel Honey Company after taking an interest in beekeeping through a homework assignment. Concluding her trip in Big Sur, Brown visits Garrapata State Park to feel the sand between her toes; explores Big Sur via an electric fat bike with Big Sur Adventures; and enjoys a glass of wine at Nepenthe.

Visit California was also able to leverage Samantha’s time on the Central Coast by working with the U.S. Travel Association's Project: Time Off team to coordinate the filming of the 2018 National Plan for Vacation Day campaign videos.

A true fan of California, Brown and her family are currently traveling the coast again on vacation while further promoting this weekend's premiere. Follow Samantha’s adventures at:
