By Kayla Bell 03/02/2021
The new “2021 Official Visitor’s Guide: The Best of California” is out! Order individual or bulk copies from VisitCalifornia.com/cvg.
The new guide is a departure from previous guides, which largely focused on new attractions, restaurants opening and the surprising hidden gems throughout the state. Due to the COVID-19 limiting openings in 2020, the 2021 guide celebrates 224 iconic destinations and local favorites.
"Blackish" star Tracee Ellis Ross graces the cover. Inside, the Los Angeles native shares her love of California, travel tips, and how California’s pioneering spirit has helped her shape a successful acting career and business. Ross truly represents “The Best of California.”

About the ‘Best of’ Guide
To help travelers thumb through the vast Golden State, "The Best of California" guide is organized into themes and by region. The 224 spotlighted destinations and activities fall under theme headings such as “Must See Wonders,” “Bites” and “Family Fun” or under region-focused headings. The guide's region-focused section starts in the north with Shasta Cascade and works its way south, ending in San Diego.
Visit California recruited an army of local experts to add authenticity to the selections and to fill the guide with their wealth of knowledge and insights. Here are a few highlights:
- Eater LA Senior Editor Farley Elliot shared his favorite bites throughout the state, from taco trucks to farm-to-fork dining to Los Alamos, a Central Coast town with an embarrassment of culinary riches.
- Author and outdoor adventurer Ann Marie Brown knows every inch of the California coastline. She points readers to 11 of her favorite beaches, stretching from La Jolla Shores in the south all the way north to Trinidad.
- North Coast winemaker Theodora Lee shares top places to sample the latest vintages, walk among the redwoods and watch a perfect sunset. The roster of experts also includes:
- Vice President of Customer Relations for Expedia Nathan Lump (former Editor in Chief at Travel & Leisure) shares 13 of his favorite hotels in California.
- Atlas Obscura Co-Founder Dylan Thuras points readers to eight enchanting oddball attractions around the state.
- Olympic athlete Brenda Martinez reveals the best places to shop, dine and explore in the Inland Empire.
