Direct Air Travel Resumes from Chengdu to Los Angeles, Marking a Milestone for Western China

By Jocilyn Schumacher 12/12/2023

In collaboration with LA Tourism, Visit California participated in an event celebrating the resumption of Sichuan Airline’s direct route between Chengdu and Los Angeles. The resumption of this flight makes Chengdu the first city in Western China to restore direct air travel between China and California. The flight successfully took off from Chengdu, Tianfu International Airport, on Nov. 24 carrying nearly 200 passengers.

This event marks a huge step in airlift development and assists in the recovery of the market as a whole. This route will provide convenient direct flight services for tourists from the southwestern region of China and beyond, offering travelers more choices for traveling to California.

During the event, Sichuan Airlines expressed gratitude to Visit California for its continuous support, provided details about the upcoming Chengdu-Los Angeles direct flight and gave Visit California time to present. Visit California showcased the diverse tourism resources available and how the state remains innovative and offers novel experiences, making it an attractive destination in the post-pandemic era. Many industry representatives expressed their determination to participate in IPW, scheduled to take place in Los Angeles in May next year. The event had around 300 attendees from across China including leaders from Sichuan Airlines, the Sichuan Provincial Logistics Office, Port Office, Customs, Tinfu Airport, as well as tour operators, online travel agencies (OTAs) and media representatives.

Visit California is set to reopen its Chengdu office in January 2024, continuing its collaboration with travel industry partners and airlines in the southwestern region, aiming to bring more Chinese tourists from this area to California.
