President & CEO Caroline Beteta announces the full reopening of Highway 1
Jan. 14, 2026
Dear Industry Partners,
California’s most iconic road is ready to welcome the world once again.
Since 1934, generations of travelers have followed the curves of Highway 1 through Big Sur, drawn by its dramatic views, small-town charm and sense of possibility.
Highway 1 at Regent’s Slide, just south of Big Sur, will reopen to travelers at noon today, Jan. 14, fully connecting the 656-mile stretch of California’s coastal route.
While winter weather may prompt intermittent closures in the months ahead, this long-awaited milestone comes months ahead of the timeline shared last September and reflects the extraordinary dedication of both the California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA) and Caltrans. Visit California and our entire industry offer heartfelt thanks to CalSTA Secretary Toks Omishakin and Caltrans District 5 Director Scott Eades for their steady leadership throughout this effort. We are also deeply grateful to the engineers, crews and support teams who showed up each day with skill, focus and care. Their work has restored a vital connection for the communities along Highway 1, and the entire tourism community is thankful.
The reopening marks meaningful progress for the destinations and small businesses that have endured years of disruption. The return of through-access brings renewed energy to the people and places that define the Highway 1 experience and have long awaited the chance to welcome travelers back. We are working closely with local partners along the corridor to ensure a coordinated and thoughtful return. The timing, just ahead of California’s rainy season, allows for continued monitoring to ensure the road remains safe and stable. This early reopening offers valuable momentum as we look toward a full recovery this summer.
Visit California is ready to support a sustained return. Our international offices will lead with early outreach, building awareness in long-haul global markets and making clear that Highway 1 is once again open for exploration. In the domestic market, we will align our reopening announcement with the spring travel planning season, when many begin mapping out their summer vacations. This timeline gives the route time to settle into regular use and ensures we reintroduce it with care and confidence.
Now, a new generation will have the chance to experience this legendary drive, whether it is their first visit or one of many. The magic of Highway 1 has always lived in the details — the pull-offs that turn into lifelong memories, the unexpected conversations in roadside cafés, the unique accommodations that provide a quiet sense of awe amid stunning views of the cliffs and ocean.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership. We look forward to celebrating this milestone together and will continue to share updates in the months ahead.
Sincerely,
Caroline Beteta
