As challenging weather events and multi-year road closures continue to test Highway 1 and its surrounding communities, a new short film created by Visit California, Louie Schwartzberg and Moving Art spotlights the corridor’s iconic beauty while delivering an urgent message of stewardship and responsible travel.
Titled Highway 1, the film reframes California’s most famous scenic drive not just as a bucket-list destination, but as a fragile, living ecosystem worth protecting for generations to come.
Filmed earlier this year shortly after the route reopened following a three-year closure, the film captures the living landscape, resilient wildlife and dramatic coastal cliffs that define the central coast.
Narrated by actor Josh Brolin, the film pairs sweeping imagery of Pacific coastlines, redwood forests, and marine sanctuaries with a call to honor the land and the local communities that sustain it.
The film officially launched on September 23 in London before an audience of U.K. media, travel trade and influencers. The showcase featured an in depth panel discussion moderated by Condé Nast Traveler sustainability writer Juliet Kinsman, See Monterey President and CEO Rob O’Keefe, Visit SLO CAL President and CEO Cathy Miller and director Louie Schwartzberg. The panelists shared practical guidance including checking road conditions before and during and as well as insight into how itinerary design, seasonality and product selection can support more responsible visitation and positive local impact.
Director Louie Schwartzberg noted, “The only way to have people change is for them to have an emotional connection which creates a feeling that influences behavior.”
Following its London debut, Highway 1 is expanding its reach through global digital distribution, targeted media events, film festival submissions and via Visit California and Moving Art platforms.
