Destination Third Thursday: Ventura County Coast

By Ashley Bisek 12/22/2020

For December’s Destination Third Thursday program, Visit California staff heard from Ventura County Lodging Association (Ventura County Coast) on tourism in the California cities of Camarillo, Oxnard, Ventura and Port Hueneme. Executive Director Brian Tucker kicked off a virtual road trip down to Ventura County Coast, with leaders from the Ventura County DMO’s stepping in to offer insights into their respective destinations.

Road Trip Ventura County Coast
The first stop along the coast, Camarillo, is located in the heart of Ventura county alongside Highway 101. Visit Camarillo Executive Director Yuliana Gonzalez shared her expertise on the family-friendly destination. Camarillo is surrounded by rolling hills and offers over 300 days of sunshine. For those looking to shop, the Camarillo Premium Outlets offers incredible discounts on popular brands. Old Town Camarillo is another place to explore fun boutiques and restaurants. Camarillo is also home to the Commemorative Air Force Museum, which specializes in restoring vintage WW2 aircraft.

Courtney Freeman, Group Sales Manager with Visit Oxnard, guided staff through the largest city in Ventura County, known for its beautiful beaches, electric nightlife, and being the closest harbor to Channel Islands National Park. The Channel Islands is a must see when visiting Ventura County Coast. It’s home to over 2,000 plant and animal species — some found nowhere else in the world. Guests can visit for the day or camp overnight and enjoy whale watching and ocean kayaking.

Staff were treated to a special stop at Point Hueneme. At this scenic beachfront, visitors can bask in year-round temperate weather while they take in stunning views of the Channel Islands and stroll along Port Hueneme Pier. A local institution, Surfside Seafood serves up delicious seafood right on the beach.

Visit Ventura President & CEO Marlyss Auster closed the show with a tour of the city of Ventura. The California surf town is the perfect place to stop for outdoor adventure. Visitors can stroll the shops at Ventura Harbor Village, take in the ocean views, or even rent kayaks. Ventura now has its first large-scale nature preserve, Harmon Canyon, which was established in 2020. It offers 2,100 acres of mountain biking, hiking, running paths, and is a true gem for the outdoor lover.
